Jeannemarie, … Jeannemarie, interesting that Stella’s rose is the one you’re warming to, cuz that one’s a rose with the volume set on “mute”! Maybe you just aren’t a rose lady! In which case, Stella’s your gal. I’m always drawn to this one in the store – the bottle’s so glamorous, and it’s one of the few mainstream women’s frags that don’t smell like cotton candy with chemical fruit salad topping. It’s a mellow little number. I now know that you must stay away from the roses Criminalmindxxx and I discussed!
Katie, I recently … Katie, I recently received a sample of, yes, “Stella,” which is described as a dark rose. I’ve always had trouble wearing or even liking rose as a erfume–until this. What is your opinion of “Stella?” I may actually buy a bottle in February! Jeannemarie
Are you referring … Are you referring to the flower *on* the bottle? They’re poppies, which don’t actually have a scent. I like how the shape of the bottle mimics the wayward growth of the poppy stem.
Another gorgeous … Another gorgeous incense: Donna Karan’s recently re-released Black Cashmere. You can still find the old bottles on line for cheap! Happy sniffing!
For another woodsy … For another woodsy one, check out Hermes’ Terre d’Hermes for a good vetiver/cedar/patchouli blend. You’ll find that in the men’s section.
Incense: I’m enjoying Tom Ford For Men Extreme. Not technically incense, but smoky and exotic, and not too crazy heavy. Check out the Comme de Garcons Incense series (my poison is Avignon), and for full “nights in the Casbah” surround-smell, Tauer Perfumes L’Air du Desert Marocain is your bunny.
Glad you’re liking Black! I think it’s a great addition to a collection – it’s soft but distinctive. Also, you’re OK getting the edt – that’s the only formulation it comes in. On me, it’s very “present” – not in a sharp, huge sillage way, but definitely there nevertheless.
For crisp outdoorsy smells, I’m enjoying Padparadscha by Satellite: it’s very forest-resiny with amber and cedar. You can get it at Luckyscent, and they offer samples to try before you buy, which is great.
Per your suggestion, I purchased Bvlgari Black. I love it, although while ordering it online, I grabbed the eau de toilette instead of parfum. Bummer, it fades pretty quickly. Smells great while it lasts, though!
I love crispy, woodsy, outdoorsy smells. I also love smoky, incensey smells. Any perfume suggestions? I wouldn’t rule out a fragrance made for men!
You’re right about … You’re right about “killer” – these 3 will knock you on your hindquarters: Montale with the Aoud, Le Labo with the spice, C&S with the soap. If you like your rose to come on like gangbusters, The Different Co’s Rose Poivre is your juice. I’m loving Byredo’s Rose Noir as a Voleur de Roses mach II. My perfume goss for you is that I was at Le Labo today & Mandy Moore had just left with bottles of Rose 31 & Patchouli 24. Nice to hear of a starlet who *isn’t* drenching herself in Child, heh-heh!
Hmmmm…i’ll have … Hmmmm…i’ll have to smell this one. Now if you’re speaking about “rose,” you have to go with the killer three: Montale Black Aoud, Le Labo Rose 31, and Czech and Speake #88…Although L’Artisan’s Voleur de Roses should get some honorable mention as well.
The bottle is … The bottle is delicate and pleasingly off-kilter. And speaking of flowers, an earlier question on fave rose perfumes from you triggered a new squirrelly search. I seem to have made myself an instant expert on roses, and reintroduced myself to an old love. Look out for upcoming rose perfume reviews, and it’s all your fault!

The bottle alone … The bottle alone makes this one worth having for your collection. As for the jus, yes, the Hawthorne (sp.?) is very pronounced. I immediately got a concentrated, dried baby oil. Another one I passed on to a daughter (who happens to love Japanese design). I do miss looking at that gorgeous bottle though!
